In a further series of trials conducted in Germany, a total of 1,200 people suffering from an acute episode of mild depression were included. Individuals were required to take either 600mg, 900mg or 1200mg of St Johns' wort or placebo for six weeks. At the end of this period, 57%, 33% and 66% of patients receiving active treatment and 25% of those receiving placebo were in remission. There is also some evidence that it might be useful at preventing relapse following an acute episode of moderate depression and St John's wort has also been shown to be beneficial in women with premenstrual syndrome.
